Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Developmental Disabilities (DD)
Surrey Place Centre and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) are leads in a Health Force Ontario IPE Grant for January 2009 – June 2010.
This project will develop curriculum in IPE and developmental disabilities and provide associated clinical placements with content experts within health care partner organizations.
The partner organizations are:
- Sick Kids Hospital;
- South Riverdale Community Health Centre;
- Bloorview Kids Rehab;
- University of Toronto Department of Medicine;
- University of Toronto Office of Inter-professional Education;
- George Brown College;
- Surrey Place Centre;
- Centre for Addiction and Mental Health ;
- Tri Region Community Network of Specialized Care;
- family members.
Intended Outcomes of this project
- Health Professionals have established IPE relationships to enable learning “about, from and with each other” to improve health outcomes for people with developmental disabilities (DD) across their lifespan.
- Health Professionals have increased knowledge related to the biopsychosocial needs of people with developmental disabilities across the lifespan.
Part 1: Case Studies and Learning Activities
Case studies of two or more people with developmental disabilities will be developed and presented in electronic format. These cases will include autism, mental health and physical health issues. Learning activities for each profession and common IPE learning activities will be offered, based on specified learning outcomes.
Case study materials will provide students with up-to-date knowledge and understanding of both issues for people with Developmental Disabilities, and interprofessional care (IPC). Relevant resources for both IPE and DD will be available and incorporated in the learning activities.
Part 2: IPE Clinical Placements
Clinical placements will offer IPE structured learning activities for students across and within partner organizations.
IPE structured learning activities within the clinical placements for students will reinforce learning through client contact and sharing of clinical expertise. Clinical preceptors will be trained to facilitate IPE structured learning advancing their own understanding of IPE and IPC.
Community Network of Specialized Care - Tri Region AllianceSurrey Place Centre hosts training and research activities on behalf of the Tri Region Alliance. This collaboration supports and facilitates the development of the skills, knowledge and attitudes of professionals and caregivers in the provision of services and supports to individuals with a developmental disability.
