Physical Health
Many of the health related conditions associated with developmental disabilities can be prevented, or their impact minimized, with proactive preventive care.
Physical Health conditions that do occur are optimally managed by timely recognition and access to appropriate care. Medical specialists at Surrey Place Centre work collaboratively to promote these goals of optimal physical health care.
Developmental Paediatricians consult to the Infancy and Early Childhood Program and the Children and Youth Program. Family physicians consult to the Adult Program as well as to community family physicians and community providers.
Mental Health
Mental Health and behavioural disturbances are frequent concerns. These problems are sometimes associated with psychiatric illness but more often represent unrecognized or untreated physical disorders or emotional distress.
Physicians at Surrey Place Centre consult to Surrey Place Centre Mental Health Teams to assist in better understanding and providing recommendations for the treatment of these mental health and behavioural disturbances.
Joint consultation (e.g., Surrey Place Centre Family Medicine and Psychiatry) and Shared Care (e.g., Surrey Place Centre Psychiatry and Community Physician) are also offered to support community partners in providing for, and implementing treatment recommendation for individuals with developmental disabilities.
