Promoting Health and Well-being
Persons with developmental disabilities are at greater risk than the general population of physical and mental health problems across the life span.
The vision of medicine at Surrey Place Centre is that each and every person with a developmental disability will be recognized as an opportunity to provide exemplary health care knowing that this will improve quality of life for that person and will help that individual live to his/her full potential.
Goals of Medical Services at Surrey Place Centre
- To raise awareness of these health risks so as to assist individuals with developmental disabilities, their care providers, and health systems, promote proactive preventive health care from birth to old age.
- When health problems arise to assist in ensuring these are addressed in a timely manner regardless of the challenges. In promoting these goals physicians at Surrey Place Centre are engaged in consultation, health related education, development of best practices and health related research (i.e. Autism Treatment Network).

- Interdisciplinary, interprofessional and shared care.
- Building capacity both at Surrey Place Centre and in the wider community to recognize health vulnerabilities, where ever possible preventing health problems from occurring and providing timely treatment when these arise.
- Developing relationships with community partners (e.g. family physicians, hospitals, specialized services) to ensure that our clients are receiving health care that is preventive, proactive, life span and responsive when more urgent and/or specialized medical interventions are required.
